Security for Chief Justice Martha Koome reinstated

The security detail for Chief Justice Martha Koome, which was withdrawn on Thursday, has been reinstated following widespread criticism from various sectors of society.

Justice Stephen Radido, President of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA), issued a strong statement on Friday confirming that the officers had been reassigned to the Chief Justice. He condemned the initial decision made by the National Police Service (NPS), questioning the rationale behind it.

Radido criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja’s explanation for the withdrawal, which cited the need for training and promotion of the officers. He argued that proper protocols should have been followed, including prior notification to the Chief Justice regarding any changes to her security detail.

In response to the backlash, IG Kanja clarified that the officers had either been sent for training after their promotion or were procedurally transferred to other stations. He acknowledged that poor coordination had resulted in the security officers leaving before their replacements arrived, creating a gap in the Chief Justice’s security.

The withdrawal of the Chief Justice’s security detail sparked outrage among Kenyans, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and members of the opposition condemning the government’s actions as an affront to the independence of the Judiciary.

As public sentiment mounted, the swift reinstatement of Chief Justice Koome’s security detail highlights the ongoing tensions between different branches of government and the importance of safeguarding judicial independence in Kenya.
