Pope Francis: A Leader of Humility and Simplicity

When Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13th, 2013, he made headlines not just for his spiritual leadership but also for his remarkable commitment to a humble and simple life. Breaking with centuries-old traditions, he chose to reject many of the symbols of papal grandeur, emphasizing his dedication to serving the poor and living modestly.

A Different Kind of Papal AttireDuring his inauguration, Pope Francis surprised many when he declined several customary papal garments and accessories. He refused the iconic red papal shoes, opting instead for his simple black shoes that he had worn as Archbishop in Argentina.

He also rejected the gold pectoral cross typically reserved for popes, choosing a modest silver cross he had used as an Archbishop.

Additionally, he declined the traditional ermine-trimmed red velvet mozzetta, describing it as “royal,” and instead appeared in plain attire.

A Humble Journey HomeFollowing his greeting to the crowds gathered at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis refused to be driven in the usual papal limousine. Instead, he joined the other cardinals on a common bus, choosing humility over luxury. The next morning, he rejected the heavy, bulletproof Mercedes-Benz car provided for his use and instead traveled in a simple economy vehicle.

Living a Life of SimplicityPope Francis’s humble lifestyle extends beyond his clothing and transportation choices. He requested to visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major—a church significant to him—where he prayed after his election and expressed his wish to be buried.

True to his values, he declined the lavish papal residence, opting to live in the modest Casa Santa Marta, a simple three-room residence where he personally owns a small living room, study, and bedroom. This marked a significant departure from the tradition of popes residing in the opulent Apostolic Palace, making him the first pope since the 17th century to live outside it.

A Leader Who Lives By ExamplePope Francis’s commitment to humility is rooted in his past. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he was known for never dressing ostentatiously as a bishop. Instead, he wore old vestments, often repurposed from predecessors, and refused to indulge in luxury.

When appointed a Cardinal by Pope St. John Paul II, he chose to reuse old robes rather than acquire new ones, reflecting his disdain for material excess.

A Voice Against Wealth and LuxuryThroughout his papacy, Pope Francis has been outspoken against the excesses of wealth and privilege. He has publicly denounced clergy and religious leaders who drive luxury cars, calling it “a scandal” and an insult to the poor. His stance is rooted in his belief that wealth should serve the vulnerable, not elevate the powerful.

A Legacy of Humility Today, as Pope Francis is laid to rest, the world remembers him not just as a spiritual leader but as a symbol of humility, compassion, and simplicity. His life and leadership remind us that true greatness lies in serving others and embracing humility—values that resonate deeply across the globe.

Rest in Peace, Pope Francis.
