Out-of-Touch MP Flies High as Staff Struggle

A growing public backlash is building against a Member of Parliament accused of living lavishly while staff attached to his office struggle to make ends meet. The lawmaker is under criticism after reports emerge that he frequently uses hired helicopters to attend events as his aides go for months without salaries and basic allowances.

Sources familiar with the MP’s office say staff morale has sunk to an all-time low, with several employees reportedly forced to borrow money to cover rent, transport, and daily meals. Some claim they have not been paid for weeks, while others say their allowances are irregular and unpredictable.

The controversy intensifies after photos and videos circulate online showing the MP landing at public functions aboard choppers, surrounded by heavy security and a large entourage. The images spark outrage among constituents who question the priorities of an elected leader meant to champion the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Critics argue that the display of wealth reflects a widening disconnect between political leaders and the realities faced by their workers and voters. Civil society groups say the situation highlights a deeper problem of poor accountability and misuse of public resources within political offices.

“This is not just about helicopters. It is about leadership values,” says a governance analyst, noting that staff welfare is a direct reflection of how an office is run. “If employees cannot afford basic needs, then something is fundamentally wrong.”

Some staff members, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisals, say they feel exploited and ignored. They claim repeated attempts to raise the issue internally have been dismissed or met with promises that are never fulfilled.

On social media, Kenyans are calling on oversight bodies to investigate how constituency and office funds are managed. Many argue that flashy lifestyles should not come at the expense of workers’ dignity.

The MP has not issued an official statement addressing the claims, but allies dismiss the criticism as politically motivated. However, pressure continues to mount as calls grow for transparency, fair labour practices, and responsible leadership.
