Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen announced that Jukwaa La Wasomi has significantly enhanced student safety and improved security around institutions of higher learning.
This initiative unites student leaders, institutional management, and security officials to identify security challenges, develop proactive crime prevention strategies, resolve conflicts, and foster a safe learning environment.
To ensure Jukwaa La Wasomi effectively serves its purpose, Murkomen stated that the Ministry is establishing a multi-agency framework to institutionalize this model.
“We will create a comprehensive framework for the institutionalization of Jukwaa La Wasomi,” Murkomen emphasized.
This initiative aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategy to decentralize security management, empowering Kenyans to participate in decision-making regarding security issues and reinforcing community policing efforts.
Additionally, the Ministry has integrated student leaders and institutional management into sub-county security committees.
“For the first time, students will have a seat at the table where decisions about their safety are made,” he remarked.
Murkomen made these statements during the graduation ceremony for Jukwaa La Wasomi Certified Professional Mediators (CPM) at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi.
“These new mediators will enhance our fight against drug and substance abuse in educational institutions, strengthen our cohesion initiatives, and promote a culture of civility in our national discussions,” he stated.
Murkomen also introduced the Kenya National Mediation Hub, which will connect over 30,000 mediation hubs from universities, TVETs, colleges, and schools nationwide with National Government Administration Officers and other relevant agencies.
