MP Nelson Koech criticizes the Executive for vetting failures

Nelson Koech, the Chair of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations and MP for Belgut, has expressed his discontent with the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their apparent failure to adequately vet nominees for diplomatic positions.

Koech’s comments came during a session at Parliament in Nairobi on Friday, following the withdrawal of Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u from her nomination to serve as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana. Ndung’u was scheduled to appear before Koech’s committee for vetting on January 10 at 9 AM but instead submitted a letter formally announcing her decision to decline the nomination.

“It is essential that we are more cautious and intentional in selecting individuals who are genuinely interested in serving the country and representing the President,” Koech stated.

He further emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting, “It is extremely embarrassing that this is the second time a nominee for the High Commission to Ghana has declined. As a committee, we do not take this lightly.”

Koech’s remarks underscore the growing concern regarding the vetting process for diplomatic appointments, highlighting the need for improved scrutiny to ensure suitable candidates are chosen for such critical roles.
