Met Forecasts Light to Moderate Rainfall Across Kenya, Including Nairobi

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting light to moderate rainfall across several regions of the country, including the capital city of Nairobi, over the coming days. The announcement brings both relief and caution as the nation continues to grapple with the effects of the ongoing wet season.

According to the weatherman, the expected precipitation will affect various parts of the country, with the Central Highlands, including Nairobi area, likely to experience occasional showers. The Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of the Coast region are also expected to receive rainfall ranging from light drizzles to moderate downpours. Temperatures are predicted to remain within normal ranges for this time of year, though cooler evenings can be anticipated in higher altitude areas.

While the rainfall brings welcome relief from dry spells and supports agricultural activities, meteorologists have warned that even moderate amounts can pose risks in areas already saturated from previous storms. Urban centres like Nairobi, with their history of drainage challenges, remain particularly vulnerable to localized flooding even with relatively modest precipitation.

In response to the forecast, the Kenya Red Cross Society has issued an urgent advisory to members of the public, emphasizing safety precautions during the rainy period. The humanitarian organization has specifically cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roads and bridges, a practice that has tragically claimed lives during previous weather events.

“Do not attempt to walk, drive, or wade through moving water,” the Kenya Red Cross warned in their advisory. “Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and just one foot of water can sweep away a vehicle. It is simply not worth the risk.” The organization further advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates, and have evacuation plans ready should conditions worsen.

The Kenya Red Cross also reminded citizens to keep emergency contacts accessible and to check on vulnerable neighbours, particularly the elderly and those living in makeshift structures that may not withstand heavy rains. Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution on roads, reduce speeds, and watch for hidden dangers such as submerged potholes or debris.

County disaster management teams have been placed on standby, with drainage inspections underway in high-risk urban zones. Authorities continue to urge cooperation from the public in maintaining cleared drainage channels and avoiding the disposal of solid waste into waterways, which exacerbates flooding.

As the nation prepares for the forecasted rains, the message remains clear: enjoy the benefits of the precipitation, but treat its potential dangers with the utmost respect.
