Kenyans across the nation on Friday united in candlelight vigils on Friday evening to honor the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s passing.
In Nairobi, ODM officials and Governor Johnson Sakaja led a gathering of hundreds at Uhuru Park, kicking off a series of activities dedicated to celebrating the legacy of the late opposition leader.
Under the theme ‘Mwezi wa Baba’, the vigil attracted supporters who hailed Raila as a hero, mentor, and a pivotal figure in Kenya’s quest for democracy.
In Eldoret, a vibrant crowd of ODM supporters filled the streets, momentarily halting traffic as they came together to remember Raila.
They spoke passionately about his role as a champion of the people, emphasizing his significant impact on Kenya’s political transformation and urging the government to honor commitments made during the formation of the broad-based government.
In Kakamega, residents participated in a remembrance procession from the ODM party headquarters in Lurambi through Kakamega Town, culminating in a heartfelt candle-lighting ceremony at the Central Roundabout.
Led by ODM County Youth League Chairperson Ernest Keya and Executive Officer Owen Musoma, this event drew participants from all 12 constituencies in the county.
They reminisced about Raila’s contributions to the fight for political freedoms and constitutional reforms leading to the 2010 Constitution, while also celebrating his Pan-Africanism and commitment to democracy, social justice, and national unity.
Similar candlelight vigils took place in Kisii, Nyamira, Narok, Turkana, Wajir, Garissa, Nakuru, Machakos, and Elgeyo Marakwet, as Kenyans nationwide paid tribute to the former Prime Minister.
These candlelight gatherings are part of a month-long program organized by the ODM party and the late leader’s family.
The program will continue with a memorial rally in Kakamega on October 9, followed by family-led activities from October 10 to 15, culminating in a memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo.
ODM plans to hold a memorial rally in Garissa on October 17, followed by engagements at the Coast on October 18 and 19, activities in Kajiado on October 21, and events in Turkana from October 23 to 25.
The program will conclude with a final memorial rally in Nairobi on October 31.
Raila passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in India.
