President William Ruto has highlighted Kenya’s partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support refugee athletes, especially those in Kakuma, Turkana County.
This initiative aims to transform Kakuma into a hub for Olympic talent by developing sports infrastructure, education, and training opportunities tailored for refugees.
During a recent meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach and UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi at State House Nairobi, President Ruto affirmed Kenya’s commitment to advancing sports infrastructure and educational programs in partnership with these organizations. This aligns with the country’s broader goals, such as leveraging the Sports Fund to foster athletic development and combat doping.
Mr. Bach praised Kenya’s established international reputation in sports and expressed the IOC’s admiration for Kenya’s comprehensive support for athletics. He acknowledged Kakuma’s unique role as a foundation for the IOC’s refugee team, with many athletes receiving their training there. The conversation also covered anti-doping measures, with both parties committed to addressing any future challenges.
UNHCR Commissioner Grandi also commended Kenya’s long-standing support for refugees, acknowledging the efforts of Turkana and Garissa counties to integrate refugee matters into their local development strategies.
