Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has officially launched his nationwide grassroot tours as he positions himself for a potential presidential run in the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i, who served in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, is reportedly eyeing the Jubilee Party ticket to challenge President William Ruto in the next polls.
Dr. Matiang’i made his first major public appearance since leaving office during a homecoming rally in Gusiiland, where he addressed enthusiastic crowds. Speaking from atop his car, he declared his intention to traverse the country to build support for his bid.
“Aren’t you going to allow me to visit the whole nation? From here, we go to Rift Valley, Central, Eastern, Meru, Coast, and Western, and also visit our brothers and sisters in Nyanza,” he said, as supporters cheered.
His tour began in Kisii County, with stops in Kijauri, Nyamira, Sotik, and Keroka, signaling a grassroots approach to rallying support. He hinted at listening to calls from his backers, stating that he is seriously considering a presidential run.

A key highlight of his tour was a closed-door meeting with Kisii Governor Simba Arati (ODM), sparking speculation about a possible political realignment.
Arati, a longtime ally of Raila Odinga, has been a staunch ODM suppoter, serving as the party’s deputy leader.
After their meeting, Matiang’i and Arati rode together in the same car, addressing a rally at Kisii’s Capital Roundabout.

While Arati has not publicly shifted allegiance, the meeting has fueled discussions about potential new alliances ahead of 2027.
Some Jubilee Party leaders have been pushing for Matiang’i’s candidacy, positioning him as a possible unity candidate.
His nationwide tours suggest an early but strategic campaign to consolidate support across different regions.
As Matiang’i embarks on his political journey, key questions remain as whether he will formally declare his presidential bid under Jubilee Party or another and how his relationship with Raila Odinga and ODM will evolve.
With the 2027 elections still years away, Matiang’i’s moves will be closely watched as Kenya’s political landscape continues to shift.
