Kelvin Opiyo, former Coast protocol officer for Raila Odinga, recently shared insights on the state of the nation. His key stances include advocating for family continuity in politics, demanding justice for recent church attacks, condemning the recycling of political leaders, and focusing on supporting principled candidates.
An overview of his specific positions includes: Raila’s Health and Legacy: Having been among the last people to interact with Raila during his Coast visit, Opiyo confirmed the former Prime Minister was in good health before returning to Nairobi. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with current state honors, arguing that naming stadiums or roads falls short of adequately honoring the legend’s legacy.
Political Continuity: Opiyo challenged politicians to go beyond the talk of term limits by considering an immediate family member of the Odinga family for the presidency or deputy presidency to maintain the legacy.
Security and Justice: Addressing the recent attacks on church congregants, Opiyo warned that the incident sets a dangerous precedent reminiscent of historical terror eras. He challenged the criminal justice system to explain why only one suspect was arrested out of 200 attackers.
With regards to Siaya County Politics, the senior engineer expressed disappointment in the recycling of leaders. He specifically challenged Ugenya member of parliament David Ochieng to vacate his parliamentary seat to allow someone better aligned with his core engineering profession to serve.
His Political Future: Kelvin Opiyo clarified that he will not vie for any elective seat himself but will actively support candidates who share his core principles.
