Ethiopia to build £5 Billion “Mega Airport City” to transform Aviation landscape

Ethiopia is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a £5 billion “Mega Airport City,” which is poised to become Africa’s largest airport and one of the busiest in the world. Located in Bishoftu, approximately 25 miles from Addis Ababa, the new airport is expected to accommodate up to 110 million passengers annually upon its completion in 2029.

The project, spearheaded by Ethiopian Airlines in partnership with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, will feature a state-of-the-art terminal and four runways, designed to significantly enhance the country’s aviation capacity. Currently, Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, positioned at an altitude of 2,334 meters, is facing congestion issues as Ethiopia works to solidify its status as a global aviation hub.

The “Mega Airport City” is set to alleviate this pressure while simultaneously boosting Ethiopia’s economy. By enhancing connectivity and positioning the country as a key player in international business and tourism, the new facility aims to rival renowned global airports such as Dubai and Heathrow.

This development marks a significant step forward for Ethiopia’s infrastructure and economic growth, with the potential to transform the region’s travel and trade dynamics.
