Biggest Political Betrayals That Shaped Kenya in 2025

Kenya’s politics in 2025 flew by. Many Kenyans can’t believe it’s almost over.

Betrayals kept coming despite the rush. They happened less often than before. Still, the big ones hit hard. People talked about them with no break.

The year started full of promise. Then early March brought the first shock.

On March 7, Raila Odinga signed a deal with President Ruto at KICC. ODM and UDA agreed on a 10-point plan. It included the NADCO report.

Kenyans disliked it. Raila had stood for human rights and fought state abuse. Now he joined the leader he opposed for years. Many saw it as a big shift from his fight for justice.

UDA/ODM MOU

Edwin Sifuna looked torn at the event. As ODM boss, he opposed the deal before. Yet he read the points out loud.

His face showed unease. He seemed to pull away from his own words. Kenyans discussed that moment for days.

Old Azimio friends hit back hard. Kalonzo Musyoka called it the worst betrayal.

He said what left KICC was the biggest sellout of Kenyans. His People’s Loyal Coalition would not trade out for short-term gain.

Jeremiah Kioni agreed. Raila broke Azimio promises by linking with UDA.

National dialogue

Raila faced more heat at Madaraka Day in Homa Bay. President Ruto joined the event. Raila asked for cash to protest victims for healing.

Kenyans got mad. They said justice comes first, not money. Not for police abuse cases.

Talking next to the president made it worse. Raila once pushed for blame on leaders. Now it looked like he took their side.

Intergenerational conclave

Saba Saba protests kept Raila in the spotlight. He skipped Kamukunji Grounds. Later at Serena Hotel, he pushed a youth-elder meeting to end the unrest.

Young protesters said no. They called it a way to calm their fight. Raila had to explain himself amid the anger.

Albert Ojwang

Anger boiled when Albert Ojwang’s dad took KSh 2 million from Ruto. His son’s death tied to police raised questions.

Kenyans pitied the family at first. But the dad thanked Ruto. He said Albert got treated like a son. Many saw it as dodging real justice. Donations dried up fast.

Raila-Sakaja bromance

Raila got close to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja late in the year. It upset his fans.

Babu Owino from Embakasi East felt stabbed. He wants Nairobi’s top job in 2027. He compared it to a dad picking the neighbor’s kid over his own.

Babu said Raila could choose. But he would run alone now. He backed Kalonzo too.

Sakaja’s impeachment push made it worse. Raila stepped in to block it. Critics said it hurt local power and rules Raila once backed.

Impeachment stays legal. Raila should let it run, they said.

Faith Odhiambo

Law Society boss Faith Odhiambo drew fire too. She took a spot on the protest victim pay committee under Makau Mutua.

Fans saw her as a rights fighter. Now she quit her cause, they claimed. She stepped down later. Her image stayed hurt.

Gideon Moi’s Baringo senatorial contest

Gideon Moi joined the list. The ex-Baringo senator and KANU head ditched his senate run.

Fans waited at Baringo Airstrip. They had trucks ready for the IEBC in Kabarnet. He never came.

Then he backed UDA’s Vincent Kiprono Chemitei. That guy won.

Savula Malava situation

In Kakamega, Ayub Savula switched sides late. He left DAP-K of Eugene Wamalwa for UDA’s David Ndakwa.

People thought he backed Seth Panyako. Posters showed him there. He jumped ship at the end.

Rigathi Gachagua calls his 2024 impeachment the top betrayal. A man he trusted and boosted did it.

In 2025 at Justin Muturi’s book event, Gachagua said he will write his story. It details the state leader’s backstab.

Raila Odinga died October 15, 2025. Yet his last year led all betrayal talk.

His late moves put his name everywhere. Others followed with their own shocks on Kenya’s political stage.
