On Sunday, August 16, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni proudly celebrated as his grandson, Ruhamya, graduated from the esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, renowned for training some of the world’s finest military officers.
Museveni took to Instagram to share this joyous news, extending heartfelt congratulations to the families of two young officers who successfully completed the demanding commissioning course at this prestigious British academy.
In his warm yet concise message, he encouraged Uganda’s youth to view military service as a vital stepping stone in their lives. He stated, “Young Ugandans, Army service provides a solid foundation. I congratulate the parents of the two young officers,” signing off with his traditional title, Ssaabalwanyi, meaning Commander of the Fighters in Luganda.
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, located near Camberley in Surrey, England, has been shaping British Army officers since 1802. Its flagship commissioning course spans approximately 44 weeks, encompassing military tactics, leadership, academic studies, and rigorous field training. The academy holds immense global prestige, having played a pivotal role in the careers of influential figures such as Winston Churchill, King Charles III, and Prince William.
With the motto “Serve to Lead,” Sandhurst instills a powerful philosophy in every officer who passes through its gates. For a Ugandan family to witness their son commissioned at such an institution signifies a remarkable achievement, especially when that family belongs to the sitting head of state.
Following his commissioning, Ruhamya is poised to join the Uganda People’s Defence Force, stepping into the military that his grandfather has led for decades.
The graduation also celebrated another Ugandan officer, Bakyira, who received equal accolades from Ugandans online. Reactions to Museveni’s post were swift and enthusiastic. Comments included: @brian_kisangara: “Congratulations Ruhamya, congratulations Bakyira, and congratulations Uganda! The future is bright. May the Almighty God continue to bless Uganda and all future generations.” @waryaronina: “Your blessed, Your Excellency, is all I can say.” @monique.amanya: “Congratulations to Ruhamya.” @_edward_twahirwa: “Today, you can witness the true bazunkuluz. Those who can benefit from bazukulu benefits.” @gigi_ka_6: “Congratulations to Ruhamya and Bakyira on this remarkable achievement. Their journey beautifully illustrates that when young Ugandans receive the right foundation, discipline, education, and opportunity, they can carry our nation’s name with honor beyond our borders.”
Additionally, details emerged regarding President Museveni’s other grandson, Mugina Karugire, who recently graduated from the University of Exeter in the UK.
The financial commitment made by his family to secure an education at such a prestigious institution has sparked significant interest among fans and followers.
This milestone represents a substantial estimated investment of KSh 24 million, covering tuition and living expenses, highlighting the Museveni family’s dedication to Mugina’s academic journey.
