Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has declared that a united team will secure all elective positions. Speaking at a roadside rally in Mumias East Constituency on May 2, 2026, Barasa, who also leads the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Kakamega County, urged residents to support candidates from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM.
“From MCA to President, we will choose ODM and UDA,” he asserted.
He criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his earlier remarks about regional leaders engaging in politics during the Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga. Barasa emphasized that the events of May 1, 2026, including COTU boss Francis Atwoli’s endorsement of President William Ruto’s re-election, represent the Western Kenya region’s support for Ruto and a broad-based government.
Barasa also advocated for his own re-election, calling on Kakamega residents to back him.
In a recent outburst, Barasa expressed his determination to prevent Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera from securing another term, labeling him a “Wantam” legislator. He advised Nabwera to learn from former Shinyalu MP Justus Kizito, who faced repercussions for opposing the former Kakamega governor, Wycliffe Oparanya.
Barasa accused Nabwera of spreading misinformation and warned against such tactics within Kakamega County’s administration. “I will ensure Mr. Nabwera is a Wantam. Ask the former Shinyalu MP what happened to those who opposed the governor,” Barasa stated.
In a show of support, former Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali endorsed Barasa for his second term, praising his leadership. Washiali affirmed that the Abawanga community stands united in their decision for Barasa to serve a full decade. “We, as the Abawanga community, have resolved that Barasa is our Tutam governor; this is our firm stance,” Washiali declared.
