Matungulu Boys High School has been closed indefinitely following a late-night fire that destroyed part of the school and left several students injured.
Police on Monday arrested four students in connection with the incident, which is being treated as a case of suspected arson. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire and determine individual responsibility.
The blaze reportedly broke out late on Sunday night, engulfing a dormitory and spreading rapidly before emergency responders managed to contain it. By the time the fire was extinguished, extensive damage had already been done.
School officials confirmed that over 300 students were affected, losing beds, bedding, books, school uniforms, and other personal belongings. Several students sustained injuries during the incident and were treated at nearby health facilities.
Education authorities say school property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in the fire, further complicating the situation as the institution assesses the full extent of the damage.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Education and local administrators ordered the immediate closure of the school to allow for investigations and to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Parents have been urged to remain calm as security agencies continue their inquiries. Officials say further action will depend on the outcome of the investigations and recommendations from safety and education officers.
The fire adds to growing concerns over unrest and safety in learning institutions, with authorities warning that those found responsible will face the full force of the law.
