Speed’s Africa Tour Sparks Joy and Debate

YouTube star IShowSpeed, real name Darren Watkins Jr, is making headlines across Africa as he connects with fans during his “Speed Does Africa” tour. The 20-year-old content creator, who has over 48 million subscribers, has drawn massive crowds in countries including Rwanda, Ethiopia, Angola, Zambia, and South Africa. Many young fans have been seen crying with joy as they meet their online hero in person.

Known for his energetic, unscripted livestreams, Speed has embraced African culture by dancing with locals, visiting markets, trying traditional foods, and exploring historical sites. In Eswatini, he was even given a traditional warrior name during a royal ceremony. His fans praise his openness, kindness, and willingness to experience new cultures, with many saying he makes them feel seen and valued.

Speed says his goal is to “show the world what Africa really is,” highlighting the continent’s energy, warmth, and diversity. His tour has sparked emotional reactions not only from African fans but also from African Americans, who say they feel proud seeing the love shown to him.

However, not everyone views the tour positively. Some critics argue that the streams are more entertainment than meaningful engagement and do little to address deeper social and economic challenges. Others say the intense crowds and heavy security sometimes overshadow local voices and moments.

Despite the criticism, many Africans say the tour has helped shift global perceptions of the continent. Local organizers and fans believe Speed’s presence has brought positive attention and challenged stereotypes by showcasing everyday life, joy, and resilience.

Speed’s rise to fame has not been without controversy, including past online bans and criticism for inappropriate behavior. Still, his supporters say he has grown and continues to use his platform to connect with people across cultures.
