Truphena’s 72-Hour Tree Hug Not Guinness Record Yet

Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has successfully completed a demanding 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri, but claims that she has already broken a Guinness World Record remain premature. While her effort has drawn nationwide admiration and generous rewards, the record has not yet been officially certified.

The 22-year-old undertook the endurance challenge without food, water, or breaks to spotlight the dangers of deforestation and its long-term impact on communities and future generations. Her determination captured public attention across the country, with thousands following her progress online. Local leaders, including Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga, visited her during the challenge to show support.

After completing the 72 hours, Truphena was showered with gifts and pledges from Kenyans impressed by her commitment. These included KSh 1 million from a betting company, a plot of land complete with a title deed, high-end smartphones, and offers for fully sponsored holidays. Social media excitement quickly followed, with many users claiming she had surpassed her earlier 48-hour Guinness World Record feat.

However, clarification has since emerged on how Guinness World Records operates. To secure a title, applicants must first submit a formal proposal online. The proposed record must meet strict criteria, it must be measurable, verifiable, and standardized. Once approved, Guinness issues precise rules that must be followed during the attempt. Participants are required to collect extensive evidence, including uninterrupted video footage, signed witness statements, detailed time logs, professional verification where applicable, and high-resolution photographs. The review process can take weeks or even months before a record is confirmed.

President William Ruto nevertheless praised her dedication to environmental conservation. He appointed her as an ambassador for the national 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, awarded her the Head of State Commendation medal, and facilitated a sponsored holiday for her team. The president also pledged Environment Ministry support for her upcoming trip to Brazil to engage in global conservation initiatives.
