The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has confirmed the tragic loss of four lives following a building collapse in Blue Estate, Shauri Moyo, Kamukunji Sub-County, on Monday, March 16, 2026.
In a recent update shared on X, the ministry reported that the collapse occurred during an attempted demolition along the Nairobi River riparian corridor, part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Project.
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba signed the update, explaining that the victims were in the process of removing steel bars and other construction materials from the abandoned structure when it unexpectedly gave way.
“Rescue teams have successfully saved four individuals, one of whom suffered minor injuries and received hospital treatment. Regrettably, we have recorded four fatalities,” the statement announced.
Ongoing Rescue Operations
Authorities continue their search and rescue operations at the site, diligently working to ascertain if additional individuals remain trapped beneath the debris.
A collaborative multi-agency team, including the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, the Kenya Red Cross, and various non-governmental organizations, has mobilized to bolster rescue efforts.
The Ministry has indicated that the exact number of individuals potentially trapped in the collapsed building is still uncertain. The Office of the Nairobi North County Commissioner is actively monitoring the situation as rescue teams meticulously sift through the rubble.
Red Cross Reports Successful Rescue Efforts
The Kenya Red Cross has declared the search and rescue operations at the Shauri Moyo building collapse complete, confirming that all individuals involved in the incident have been accounted for.
“Final Update: Search and rescue operations have concluded, with all individuals involved in the incident accounted for,” stated a post from the Kenya Red Cross on X.
Earlier reports from the Red Cross indicated that several individuals were present near the structure at the time of the collapse. Emergency teams promptly arrived at the scene and began clearing debris in search of survivors.
First aid was administered to some rescued individuals on-site before they were transported to the hospital for further care.
The humanitarian agency noted that the collapsed building was situated near other structures designated for demolition as part of the Nairobi River regeneration initiative.
**Demolition Linked to River Project**
The collapse coincided with ongoing demolition activities targeting structures along the Nairobi River riparian corridor.
The Nairobi River Regeneration Project aims to eliminate encroachments along the river, mitigate pollution, and restore the waterway. Authorities have identified several abandoned structures within the corridor for demolition as part of this vital project.
Officials have committed to providing further updates as search and rescue operations progress and more information regarding the incident becomes available.
