33 year old investigative journalist and film producer Thomas Jonathan Ossoff currently leading in the race, on Wednesday 6th January declared victory in the just concluded Senate race.
“It is with humility that I thank the people of Georgia for electing me to serve you in the United States Senate. Thank you for the confidence and trust that you have placed in me. Let’s unite now to beat this virus and rush economic relief to the people of our state, and to the American people.” said Ossof
With 98% of the votes having been counted, Ossof was leading with 2,208,717 against Republican David Perdue with 2,192,347 votes. Ossof’s declaration may have been prompted by the fact that the remaining uncounted votes appeared largely to be in Democratic-leaning counties in the Atlanta such as DeKalb and Fulton, as well as military and overseas balots.
According to Ossof’s campaign manager Ellen Foster, the outstanding vote is squarely in parts of the state where Jon’s performance has been dominant.
Ossof becomes the second Georgia Democrat to win in the January 5 runoff election a day after Reverend Raphael Warnock was projected winner against Republican Kelly Loeffler. Ossoff ran for Congress in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District in 2017, and lost to Republican Karen Handel in a runoff.
The two run-off races billed the most expensive in US history drew record levels of campaign spending , more than half a billion dollars in two months.
Ossoff and Warnock’s victories has flipped the balance of Power in the US Senate and as result the Democrats will take over Senate leadership from the Republicans thus making it easier for President Elect Joe Biden to govern more easily.
