The Ministry of Education has officially revoked the appointment of Prof. Amukowa Anangwe as the chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council.
The decision was communicated in a gazette notice on February 21, 2025, by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, which stated that the revocation takes immediate effect.
“Pursuant to the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, as well as section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary hereby revokes the appointment of Prof. Amukowa Anangwe as the Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi, effective today,” the notice indicated.
In light of this development, the University’s management has responded critically to the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials, who threatened to strike over Anangwe’s removal. The management accused UASU of pursuing ulterior motives, suggesting that the union’s efforts were aimed at protecting corrupt individuals within its ranks and obstructing necessary reforms at the university.
“This attempt to disrupt university operations serves as a diversionary tactic designed to hinder ongoing investigations involving certain union officials,” stated John Orindi, Director of Corporate Affairs. He lamented the resistance from “disgruntled elements” benefiting from the existing corrupt practices, urging university staff to avoid participating in strikes that could impede progress.
The University further dismissed allegations against Prof. Anangwe as unfounded, asserting that all decisions made at the institution followed the required legal protocols. The statement elaborated on the distinct functions of the Council, Chancellor, and Vice-Chancellor, emphasizing that the governance processes of UoN are transparent and lawful.
