Judge Douglas sends Besigye back to prison for almost fainting in court

In a court ruling, Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has been ordered to return to prison despite his worsening health condition. Judge Douglas Singiza stated that due to Besigye’s frail state, he could not remain in court, expressing concerns that he could faint.

Dr. Besigye appeared in court on February 19 looking weak and unwell. He was accompanied by his aide, Haji Obeid Lutale, but both men were ordered back to prison by the judge. Besigye’s legal team is currently preparing a habeas corpus petition to contest his detention.

The opposition figure had been hospitalized recently due to his deteriorating health, which has been exacerbated by a hunger strike he initiated to protest his ongoing detention. Following his treatment at a clinic in Kampala, Besigye’s family has been vocal about their demands for his immediate release, asserting that he has committed no crime.

On February 18, the family sent an emotional letter to President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, decrying Besigye’s continued detention as a violation of court orders. They highlighted the distressing news of his hunger strike, countering claims from some officials that his health issues were merely a result of illness.

In their letter, the family characterized Besigye’s detention as a form of state-sanctioned kidnapping, calling for his unconditional release as they seek justice for the opposition leader.

As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely, calling for accountability and the respect of human rights within Uganda.
