Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that a recent disturbance at a church service in Nyeri was not accidental but a deliberate attempt to eliminate him.
Speaking after the incident, Gachagua claimed the chaos that erupted during the church gathering was carefully planned and politically motivated. He said the attackers intended to cause harm to him under the cover of a public religious event.
“This was not a random act. It was a targeted attempt on my life,” Gachagua stated, adding that the incident should be treated as a serious security threat rather than a simple disruption.
According to witnesses, confusion broke out during the service after unknown individuals caused a commotion, forcing security personnel to intervene. The service was briefly interrupted as congregants scrambled for safety.
Gachagua has called on security agencies to conduct thorough investigations and identify those behind the incident. He warned that rising political intolerance poses a danger to national stability and should not be ignored.
The former deputy president also urged religious institutions to remain neutral spaces, saying churches should never be turned into arenas for political violence or intimidation.
Police are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident, but sources indicate that investigations are ongoing.
The incident adds to growing concerns about the safety of political leaders amid heightened tensions across the country.
