Fights in ODM as Luhya leaders demand respect for Edwin Sifuna

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is facing significant internal strife as Luhya leaders, spearheaded by Vihiga County Senator Godfrey Osotsi, rally to defend the party’s Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna. This infighting has come to light following Sifuna’s outspoken criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, which has drawn fire from a faction within ODM that appears to align more closely with the government.

Senator Osotsi expressed his frustration over the personal attacks directed at Edwin Sifuna, emphasizing that the Secretary General’s statements reflect the consensus of the ODM Central Management Committee, of which he is a key member. “It is disheartening to see some of our own party members attacking Sifuna for merely articulating the committee’s position,” Osotsi stated. He believes these attacks not only undermine party unity but also exemplify a worrisome trend of political intolerance.

Addressing the dissenting ODM members, Osotsi urged them to reconsider their approach. “We must allow our members to express their opinions freely without fear of being silenced. Muzzling our voices will only lead to the party’s demise,” he warned. He further announced that a meeting would be convened next week to address these grievances and restore harmony within the ranks.

The situation highlights a growing divide within ODM, as some members appear to support President Ruto’s broad-based government strategy, creating tension among party loyalists. As the political landscape in Kenya continues to shift, the ability of ODM to navigate this internal crisis will be crucial for its future stability and influence. The ongoing conflict raises questions about the party’s direction and unity as it approaches the next electoral cycle.
