AU “frees” Raila Odinga from his Special Envoy job

The Africa Union has written to ODM leader Raila Odinga informing him that his mandate as an African Union (AU) special envoy has come to an end.

The news was broken by the Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’Oei who tweeted a copy of the letter from the AU saying “End of tenure notification. We thank the Rt. Hon @RailaOdinga for his service to the continental body,”

In the letter to Raila Odinga dated February 19, 2023, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahama informed the former Prime Minister that the African Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) will take over his role and thanked him for his services.

Saying Odinga’s tenure in the role had come to a happy conclusion, Mahama said, “Your exceptional leadership and unique command of the issues concerned has been crucial to the leveraging of infrastructure as a key priority within the Continental agenda.”

Mahama noted that Odinga will still remain a valuable person to the African Union and hoped to continue counting on his support for other possible assignments.

“Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors. Please accept, Excellency, the expression of my highest consideration and personal esteem,” he said.

In his rejoinder, the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga wrote back to the AU Chair expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and welcoming the decision to terminate his appointment.

Raila said in the letter that he is now free to pursue other pressing and urgent matters.

He expressed his pride in these accomplishments and his pleasure at having served the continent and its people.
