In a shocking incident this morning, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was forced to seek refuge within P.C.E.A Mwiki church in Kasarani after armed goons stormed the venue, creating chaos and endangering the lives of worshippers.
Gachagua, who was attending the fellowship service alongside members of his team, witnessed the disruption shortly after settling in for the service. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of individuals, armed with dangerous weapons, forcefully gained entry into the church, overpowering Gachagua’s security detail.
The attackers hurled stones at the congregation, broke chairs, and caused widespread panic among worshippers, including women and children. In the midst of the violence, several phones were reportedly snatched from members of the congregation.
Members of Team Riggy G quickly sprang into action to contain the situation and protect the congregation. Despite their efforts, several people sustained injuries during the scuffle, including Gachagua’s people, who suffered hand injury and damage to clothing.
“This despicable act of violence, particularly within a place of worship, must be condemned in the strongest terms,” a politician from Gachagua’s team stated. “The sanctity of the church must be respected, and we urge the relevant authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
On his side, the former deputy president directed the blame at President Ruto, adding that it was wrong for the government to curtail the freedom of movement. This is what he had to say:” Unfortunately, there are concerted efforts to curtail our freedom to move around the country and associate with like-minded people. I did not mind Ruto sending goons after me, but in church? Surely? What has happened to you, Mr. president?”
This attack comes just one day after President William Ruto concluded a five-day tour of the Mt. Kenya region, where Gachagua hails from. The timing of the attack raises concerns about the escalating political tensions in the area.
As the dust settles from this alarming episode, the community is left to grapple with the implications of such violence in a place meant for peace and worship. Authorities are being urged to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all citizens, particularly in sacred spaces.
