IEBC blacklists 241 aspirants; wants them barred from running

EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday 1st June released a list of 241 political aspirants running for the August August 9 elections it considers unfit to hold public office.

The ethics body wrote to the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) asking that the 241 be barred from running.

The EACC said the flagging follows a thorough verification process it undertook with respect to 21,863 persons seeking registration as candidates in the upcoming elections.

“EACC considers these persons to have fallen short of the moral and ethical standards stipulated for election to public office. EACC hopes that IEBC will make appropriate decisions guided by Constitutional Values and public interest.” said EACC in the letter signed by CEO Twalib Mbarak.

The list includes 2 presidential aspirants and one presidential running mate who had had declared interest in running for the presidency.
