Facebook changes its name to Meta

Facebook announced Thursday that it was changing its company name to Meta. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced at his company’s Connect event that its new name will be Meta. “We are a company that builds technology to connect,” said Zuckerberg. “Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”

Zuckerberg said the name Facebook doesn’t fully encompass everything the company does now, and is still closely linked to one product. “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.” he added.

According to the Vice President of Facebook for Africa and Middle East Ms. Derma Matras, the move presents a significant number of opportunities for Africa. “Think of it as the next name for internet and says its the future of social technology”.

Metaverse is a speculative future iteration of the Internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe. The metaverse in a broader sense may not only refer to virtual worlds, but Internet as a whole, including the entire spectrum of augmented reality.
